Extension care explained by an expert!
Once you leave the salon with your new look, the care of the extensions falls into your hands. If your visit was at one of the Beauty Barour -s we are sure the Belher experts explained what to do and what not to do when it comes to hair extensions. But if you haven't had the chance or you're outside Bucharest and want a natural long-lasting effect, between salon visits you need to follow a few simple rules that will extend the life of your extensions.
Before that, let's talk a little about the types of extensions so you have an overview when we move on to do's and don'ts!
-
Clip-On Extensions and Flip-In extensions are part of the ready-to-wear extensions category and can be easily applied and removed in the salon or even at home. They can be dyed and toned and reused, allowing you to play with different options for a constantly changing look. They come in the form of multiple wefts or a single weft.

Tape-on Extensions (or adhesive tape extensions) are natural hair extensions where the hair strands are joined at the end by an adhesive tape. This tape matches the hair color, making it unnoticeable from the outside. Professional installation is key to long-lasting and quality results. Maintenance for these extensions is done every 8-10 weeks or depending on hair growth speed.

Nano-ring Extensions and Micro-ring are semi-permanent extensions attached to hair strands using small rings with a silicone band for extra hair protection. Nano-ring extensions are smaller and thus more discreet than regular nano-ring ones, but both become unnoticeable when applied correctly. They are reapplied every 8-10 weeks and can be reused multiple times.
-
Sewn Extensions come in the form of a hair weft applied by various methods. For example, they can be sewn onto a thin braid at the scalp base or attached using silicone rings through which they are sewn. They are increasingly popular because you can reuse them many times and they do not require frequent maintenance. Extensions sewn with nano-ring loops are also called LA Weaves. Keratin Extensions are semi-permanent extensions made from natural hair, applied with hot bonding, which must be installed by an experienced person. Once applied, they can last in the hair for up to 3 months. Keratin extensions are among the longest-lasting hair extensions. The keratin bond of the extensions is a natural nourishing substance that does not affect the hair during bonding or use and is very easy to remove with a special solution.
Pro Tip: Before applying your extensions, we recommend taking some time to have a conversation with the specialist applying them to find out in advance what care they require. If they cannot provide you with this advice, we suggest looking for someone else.
When we talk about caring for extensions, whether ready-to-wear or semi-permanent, the most important point of discussion is hydration. That is why most of the tips below mainly aim to prevent dehydration and improve hydration. Let’s go!
- The scalp must be kept as clean as possible
This advice applies to all types of semi-permanent extensions, especially those with a long uninterrupted wearing period. Although extensions do not affect the hair strand itself, having the attachment system close to the roots can lead to buildup of dust and care products. That is why it is very important to dedicate more time to washing the scalp. Also, before washing the extensions, we recommend combing them very well and using a sulfate-free shampoo. We recommend Belher ultra-hydrating sulfate-free shampoo specially created for extensions, but it can also be used for your own hair. For an effective wash, use prolonged movements from the roots to the ends to avoid tangling.
- More frequent salon visits
Once the extensions are applied, for proper care you will need to visit the salon a bit more often so the extension technician can check the condition of the extensions and detangle them—not at the ends, where you can do it yourself, but at the roots. A rule you have probably heard is that you should not wash your hair for 48 hours after application. It is very important that the attachment system has time to settle and anchor well to your hair. This applies only to semi-permanent extensions.
- Avoid heat
When it comes to styling, it is very important to style your extensions only when necessary to extend their lifespan. Heat affects your natural hair, but even more so the extensions, as they don't have a source of hydration like your own hair. That's why you need to be very careful when using a hairdryer, straightener, and curling iron. Ideally, let the extensions air dry and then comb and style them with heat. However, if you decide to use a hairdryer, we recommend using medium heat and speed. The styling process will take a little longer, but these changes will keep the extensions beautiful and hydrated for longer.

The magic word is "hydration"!
When you wear extensions, the most important aspect you need to know about their care is hydration. Hydrated extensions make a woman happy. To keep them hydrated, you need to do two things:
-
Hydrate them (duh)
The easiest thing you can do besides using a sulfate- and salt-free shampoo is to use an intensely hydrating mask. For this, we recommend the Belher treatment mask for wigs and hair extensions. Both the mask and the Belher shampoo were specially created for extension care and have a higher hydration level than most products on the market.
-
Avoid dehydration
Since we talked above about dehydration of extensions using styling tools, now let's move on to styling products. If they contain salt, sulfates, and/or alcohol, then these products should be completely avoided. They will dry out your hair and extensions a lot, and any hydration you gain on one side by using special Belher care products, you will lose on the other.
-
Tie your hair up at night
If you wash your hair before bed, it is very important not to go to sleep with wet hair and extensions. Since you now have more hair, you will wake up with wet and tangled hair. For the best care, it is recommended to tie your hair up at night and not leave it loose.
Pro Tip: Change your pillowcase if it is rough. Choose a softer, more satin pillowcase. Both your hair and your extensions will thank you.
Extra caution at the pool
Although it is quite well known that the pool and extensions don't really mix, we consider it necessary to remind this in this article as well. The chemicals in the pool water that help clean the pool are a real danger to extensions. Our recommendation is to tie your hair up and not let water touch your hair. For extra protection, you can use a swimming cap, but depending on how much hair you have, it might not fit all.
